What a great time we had this summer with our family cooking sessions!

Thanks to everyone who came along to our free Summer Cookery Course at Feel Good Factor in August. Our simple lunchtime class was a chance for families and individuals to get together and make, and taste, new foods and learn together.

Esther Foster, Feel Good Factor Community Wellbeing Worker, said, “These simple, no frills sessions were a resounding success! With the Olympics well and truly in mind we made ‘healthy pizza flags’ of all nations, Spanish, Italian, British, Swiss, American and more! Using brown bread in our sandwiches, we learned about how it’s great for feeling fuller for longer, as well as all the lovely fibre! And our ‘eat a rainbow’ idea helped everyone to learn how different colours of food contain different nutrients. And then there was the Smoothie Factor competition.”

Making fruity snacks for summer involved being really very creative, with Strawberry Mice - strawberries, almonds, choc drops sitting on a bed of cheese and crackers and Palm trees made from satsumas, kiwi and banana.

The Smoothie Factor competition pitched  Green vs Red vs Yellow and … the Green Smoothie won. Recipes as follows:

Green Smoothie: green grape, apple, spinach and natural yogurt
Red Smoothie: frozen berries, strawberry yogurt, banana and milk
Yellow Smoothie: mango, orange juice and banana

Esther continued, “I really enjoyed seeing new friendships being made, as well as old friends getting together.”

It wasn’t all cooking though, there were plenty of activities related to the various themes of the sessions to get stuck into too.

We’re hoping to put these free sessions on again in the next holidays and, in the meantime, please do look out for our popular Cook4Life sessions which will be returning in the Autumn to local venues.
